Topic: Sariling Gawa’s Evolution and Impact of Filipino Youth Leaders in Hawaii
- Presenters gave a brief overview of the early years of SG, and how it has impacted their personal lives over the years. In addition, presenters discussed SG’s impact in the community with focus on educational achievement, employment success, political influence, and cultural pride and identity.
- Youth leaders led the 18 attendees in two activities: “Count Off” and “Human Rock Paper Scissors”
Chartered City Tour & Reception, July 11:
- Newberry Library – very brief visit with a talk from staff, view of bust of Rizal, collection of Rizal’s writings, artwork by Philippine artist
- Field Museum – very brief visit of Philippine wedding dress, and a mention of a collection of knives
- Shedd Aquarium – Wild Reef exhibit featuring Philippine coral reef with sand from the Philippines
- Rizal Monument in a small park
- City Drive-By Tour – Lake Shore Drive, Grant Park, Taste of Chicago, Lake Michigan, Chicago River, Art Institute, Millennium Park, Navy Pier, Chicago’s architectural wonders, the Chicago skyline
- Seafood City – brand new Filipino grocery store, empty bay units ready to be occupied by vendors
- Dinner & Entertainment – Filipino cuisine, mango and ube cake and ice cream, music/band, singing, dancing, drama performance
National Conference, July 12-14:
- The FANHS National Conference was held at Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Chicago, Illinois. About 130 presentations were given in breakout sessions throughout the 3 days. The conference culminated at a gala event with a plated dinner (filet mignon and salmon filet on a bed of mashed potatoes, and mango cheesecake) and entertainment.
- Over 200 people from the FANHS National organization and 35 chapters across the nation were in attendance. FANHS Hawaii is Chapter 34 organized in 2015.
- NOTE: The next national conference will be held in Hawaii at the Marriott Hotel in Waikiki on July 1-4, 2020. Youth leaders expressed an interest in helping out for the Hawaii conference and took the initiative to introduce themselves to the FANHS Hawaii officers and members.
